An era ago, when Sir Dorabji Tata founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company in 1907, In order to run an industry that required about 1,500 acres, the Tata’s went on to handle an entire city of 15,000 acres. As a result, near the convergence of two rivers, India’s first modern industrial township became a part of world’s history. It was on January 2, 1919, in memory of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, the then Governor-General and Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford named the town Jamshedpur.
Situated in the midst of mineral rich areas of Jharkhand and West Bengal, Jamshedpur has become the hub for steel manufacturing in India. With the easy access to steel and raw materials the real estate industry in the city, Kolkata and other surrounding areas boomed. Such accessibility to steel and iron has over the course of the last 100 years encouraged developers to construct ambitious projects in and around the area. Not only raw materials but the widespread manufacturing industry in Jamshedpur has also helped promote real estate in this region. Developers find it easier and more economical to acquire land in the city or bordering regions and develop projects. As a whole this has boosted the economy of the industrial city.
Today, as we look back over the last hundred years, we laud the accomplishment of Jamshedpur as home to the biggest steel factory in the country. Not officially on the list of smart cities, it has in all earnestness adopted multiple technological solutions like Tata Communications’ LoRa network for smart city services such as smart metering and lighting.
