Interview with Australian architect John Andreas - Director at WMK Architecture, winner of NSW IES Lighting Award Commendation for the ASX 20 Bridge St Foyer/Lobby in Sydney. How have environment consideration affected your approach to architectural design and its implementation? As architects and interior designers, all aspects of our practice are informed by environmental principles. Our Blackmores project won the 2010 Australian Institute of Architects Sustainable architecture award. A building obviously exists for many years after its creation. Its existence is a unique legacy not unlike a song or a book or a motion picture. People will look at it and have a view as to its excellence or otherwise. Does WMK tend to collaborate and engage with specialist, lighting design companies for particular projects? We have used specialists for many of our projects; it’s always a challenge convincing our clients to use them though. Another challenge at the moment is the successful use of LED lighting. Any interesting anecdotes I was working on a large mixed use development in Beijing and after a long meeting the clients son offered to take me for a spin in his new Ferrari. So we did a few laps at a ridiculous speed around both Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, how we didn’t wipe out hundreds of locals on their bikes still remains a mystery to me! Source: illumni
