Drew White is making his mark on Indiana and beyond. Together with Kevin Cooper, White founded Axis Architecture + Interiors in Indianapolis in 1995, when the duo was presented with an opportunity to design a new showroom, office and warehouse space for Business Furniture Corp. White describes his architectural philosophy as rational, clean and honest with a modern overtone. What’s the biggest challenge you have faced and the biggest success you have enjoyed on the job? “Challenge: human resource issues and employees leaving. We have an open environment that allows our studio mates to learn so much about the practice, and it allows them to leave and start their own firms. It’s a compliment to Axis’s culture of sharing and collaboration. “Success: learning from my studio mates about what is important to them in terms of design and business practices.” What’s been the most surprising thing you’ve learned in the course of your career? “Understanding multigenerational employee influences. We currently have millennials, Gen-Xers and baby boomers co-existing in the studio. Each has his or her own desires and requirements as they relate to the culture of the studio. It’s challenging but also exciting.” What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received? “My mom and dad were influential with early career advice, and it was simple — ‘Work hard and work smart.’ The other quote was, ‘Take care of your job, and your job will take care of you.” Source: INDYSTAR
