The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) is offering property tax defaulters an opportunity to clear their dues without paying the full penalty and interest.
The waiverwill be granted only on "valid grounds", such as financial duress, unresolved disputes with the government body and medical emergency. The civic authorities would decide whether or not to grant the waiver and how much to grant on a case-by-case basis. The scheme is similar to the one the civic body had introduced in 2012. But unlike then, the CMC is not calling it "waiver scheme”.
The civic authorities have identified 20,000 properties each of which owes the civic body around Rs. 2 lakh in property tax dues. A team will be formed to visit these houses. The civic teams are also handing over to the residents’ copies of the Self-Assessment Form, which property owners have to fill in and submit.
