The tax branch of the municipal corporation (MC) has sent property tax bills to over 5,000 residents in 12 sectors through the post office on the lines of water and power bills for the first time in the city. “On the first day of the new financial year on Monday, we sent residential property tax bills in sectors 2 to 7, 9, 16, 19, 23, 18 and 32. We covered around 5,000 houses. We have prepared the bills sector-wise and are hopeful to cover the entire city in a week. Printing of each bill is costing Rs 30 to the MC but we are not passing on the cost to the public,” said a senior officer of the MC.
Earlier, the process was under self-assessment scheme — people had to file the tax on their own without any intimation except advertisement through newspapers and notice. With property tax amount turning out to be a major revenue generation now, the civic body is sending bills at the doorsteps of residents.
