Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed that the state cabinet has cleared the proposal to invite bids for privatization of Nagpur airport. He was in the city to inaugurate two cold storage units located at the airport.
He said, “Further investment in the aviation sector is expected in coming days as talks are under way with corporate giants like Boeing, Tatas and Reliance.”
After the cabinet approval, Mihan India Limited (MIL), the current operator, can go ahead with inviting requests for proposals (RFPs) from the private players which have been cleared in the qualifying round. These include Essel Infrastructure, IRB, GVK, GMR, Tata Realty and PNC Infrastructure. A security clearance has been issued for the all the companies except IRB as it backed out of the deal subsequently.
MIL is a joint venture of state government’s Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and centre’s Airport Authority of India (AAI). Both the partners have contributed equity in the form of land and infrastructure in the JV. Now, both AAI and MADC are supposed to sign a lease deed for the assets with MIL.
MIL was formed in 2009 but the formality could not be completed yet. MIL will have to formally have the airport assets in its hand through the lease deed before it goes ahead with privatization. Sources say the process would be completed as AAI’s survey of land expected to be finished soon.
