Gujarat may soon follow Maharashtra redevelopment model

Creaky, lowrise housing societies and commercial complexes in Ahmedabad have often turned into legal battlegrounds involving developers and a handful of members when it came to redevelopment. Gujarat is likely to announce a redevelopment policy, loosely modelled on the Maharashtra law, soon. Though the state governments allows redevelopment of private societies, provisions of the existing Gujarat Ownership Flats Act, 1973 and general development control regulations (GDCR) requires consent of 100% of society members. Under the new policy, the government is planning to relax the consent clause by allowing redevelopment decision even if only 60% or 70% members wish so. “The clause is still under discussion,” said a senior official from urban development department.
