Registered construction workers in the city will soon be able to avail free food at AmmaUnavagams as a new scheme will be introduced through the amendment of Tamil Nadu Manual Workers (Construction Workers) Welfare Scheme, 1994.
The municipal administration and water supply department will be passing a government order for it based on a proposal from the Greater Chennai Corporation.
The scheme will allow workers to avail food free of cost and their monthly bills, to be maintained by the canteens, will be settled by the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board (TNCWWB).
The board will pay the original cost of production — not the subsidized Amma canteen rates. “While idli and pongal are available for Rs 1 and Rs 3, the TNCWWB will reimburse the production cost to corporation. The corporation and workers, both stand to be benefited by the scheme,” said an official.
