Getting a few hours of uninterrupted sleep in the night has become a tough task for residents living in areas such as Kondapur, Manikonda and along the Manjeera Pipeline road. Incessant construction activity in these areas has made life difficult for them.
With several buildings currently under construction here, locals say that getting proper sleep has become next to impossible. “Since I moved here two years ago, there seems to be no end to the movement of trucks and heavy machinery at night loading and unloading construction material. The noise becomes unbearable at night. At times, I am unable to get back to sleep and stay awake all night,” said Udit Sharma, a techie residing near the Manjeera Pipeline road.
Another irate resident took to Twitter to complain to the police about this issue. Pritam Kumar Paul tweeted, “Hello sir, construction work going on in the middle of the night. They are dropping iron rods making huge noise. Citizens cannot sleep. Is this the way to do work? How can u let this happen? There are elders and folks want to sleep after a hectic week. Please check and stop this nuisance. ”
Doctors in city point out how sleep deficit is a common issue among IT professionals, most of whom reside in the Cyberabad area. Also, poor quality of sleep has a direct correlation with anxiety and depression, as per several studies.
“Sleep is very essential to help maintain mood, memory and cognitive performance. Daytime alertness and memory are impaired by loss of sleep, especially when it is sustained over a few nights,” as per a study by WellSpan York Hospital, USA, in association with city-based Heartfullness Foundation.
Speaking about the issue, city developers said that they are forced to carry out works in the night owing to heavy traffic flow in the area during the day.
