BMC attached a plot belonging to Raj Developers in Borivli over non-payment of Rs 1.3 crore property tax. BMC is tightening its grip on tax defaulters and pressuring them to clear their dues by attaching their properties. BMC has also barred defaulters from creating third party rights before clearing pending dues. Civic officials cut the water supply of a tax defaulter as the first step before attaching their properties. In the past two months, BMC has acted against nearly 100 such defaulters, some of who cleared their dues after the action. Officials stated they wanted to achieve their yearly property tax collection target before March 31, adding builders comprised a chunk of defaulters on their list.
Property tax collection is a key source of income for the BMC after the building construction department, which has been on the decline in the past two years due to a slowdown in the property market.
