Why Ahmedabad can’t get high: Hurdles confronting redevelopment
Much before the state government could conceive a redevelopment policy, a group of 12 developers in Ahmedabad had — between 2009 and 2012 — contacted 50 residential societies in the city. The developers offered the societies better amenities, larger rooms, and designated parking lots as part of the redevelopment deal. Most of these old societies were lowrises, consumed low FSI, and had limited amenities. Masuri Society in Usmanpura agreed to the terms, while another private developer bid for the redevelopment of Bank of India staff quarters in Vejalpur. Today, areas such as Navrangpura, parts of Naranpura, the stretch between Thaltej to Income Tax, Ellisbridge, and Vadaj have societies that are ripe for redevelopment.
