Rajkot civic body collects over Rs 1 cr in property tax in just one day

Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) collected Rs 1.13 crore property tax on a single day on Saturday — if this is anything to show how the civic body is aggressively pushing its drive against property tax defaulters. The RMC authorities aims to achieve its target of Rs 245 crore by March 31, of which it has already recovered Rs 210 crore till Saturday evening. To this effect, the civic body has pulled out all stops and engaged maximum employees of all its departments. There are 40 departments in RMC, of which employees of 37 departments, except emergency service like water works, fire brigade and solid waste, have been pressed into tax recovery service till March 31. Talking to media persons, municipal commissioner BancchaNidhiPani, said: “We hope to achieve our tax collection target by March 31 and therefore, have embarked aggressively on our campaign.” According to sources, nearly 2,000 employees from 37 departments along with 500 employees of the tax department are working in various teams on the field to recover tax dues. The sealing campaign will continue on Sunday as well. The RMC, on Saturday, collected cheques of Rs 35 lakh from 15 industries in Vavdi industrial area, while Supad complex of Raiyachowk alone paid tax dues of Rs 2 lakh on the spot when RMC officials reached to seal the property. The RMC team collected cheques worth Rs 60 lakh from east zone and Rs 15.46 lakh from central zone, while it also sealed 11 properties. Soni Bazar of palace road, Divanpara and Kotharia Naka area had been on the RMC officials’ radar on Saturday.
