Quality of EWS housing questionable
It is one of the biggest scare staring the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in its face. The quality of thousands of houses that have been constructed for the urban poor under the Jawharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) has come under the scanner after lumps fell from the ceiling of one such house in Kishanwadi. The VMC had taken up work on 21,696 houses for the urban poor under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme under JnNURM. The project reports and tendering for the housing schemes were taken up in a phased manner by the civic body since 2005-06. Today, all but 4,096 dwellings have been constructed and most of them are occupied. Complaints of shoddy work on the housing schemes had started trickling in from the first monsoon itself after the residents moved into their houses in Kishanwadi, Jambuva, Maneja and other areas. Houses had developed leaks and water used to trickle up to the ground floors of these dwellings.
