The Punjab Council of Ministers (CoM) on Friday gave nod to The Punjab ShehriAwas Yojana-2017 to provide free housing to “eligible houseless” SC/BC families residing in urban areas. The scheme was a major poll promise of the Congress.

Under the scheme, the urban households with an annual income of less than Rs 3 lakh in the first phase and Rs 5 lakh in the second phase will be eligible to claim free housing facility.

The scheme would also provide facility of cheap home loans to lower income group (LIG) families (having an annual income from all sources less than Rs 6 lakh) and middle income group (MIG) families (having an annual income from all sources less than Rs 18 lakh).

Chief minister Amarinder Singh stated that “utmost care” should be taken to ensure that the scheme benefits the real beneficiaries. He observed that often the “true beneficiaries” fail to get the benefit of social welfare schemes due to errors of inclusion or exclusion. He directed that extreme care should be taken to avoid such errors.
