Property tax defaults majorly from Andheri, Kalina and Worli
Stung by a dip in revenue income as indicated in its recent budget, the BMC has decided to pursue three lakh-plus entities who owe it over Rs 3,000 crore, especially in the last couple of months of the current fiscal. Civic officials from the assessment and collectors department said this due amount is undisputed and pursuing it could be smoother in comparison to the disputed dues running into Rs 9,430 crore. A ward-wise break-up shows the maximum number of defaulters is from K-East (Andheri), G-South (Worli) and H-East (Kalina). These include residential as well as commercial establishments (see box). A civic official said if property tax is not paid to the civic body within 90 days from due date, action is initiated against defaulters. This time, BMC has already initiated stern action to ensure they are able to meet their targets.
