A day after three people died and six others were injured after a portion of Memsahab Building collapsed in Ulhasnagar, the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation decided to make it compulsory to get structural audits of more than 800 buildings done. Commissioner AchyutHange said they will make it compulsory to get these audits of buildings which were constructed prior to 1995. "If a certain building fails to get its structural audit done, the municipal corporation will have the same concuted for that building. The cost of the audit will be recovered from the members of the building or housing society," he said. Hangefurhther said that over the last few years, many buildings, which had been constructed between 1993 and 1995, have collapsed. "In July 2008, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation had served notices to around 800 buildings and had appealed to them to get structural audits done. But, barely 2 per cent of the buildings had done the structural audits. The rest did not bother to heed to the notice." Hange said they will now make it compulsory for the remaining buildings to get the audit done. "Depending on the audit report, action will be taken against buildings in a precarious state."
