Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has asked all local bodies in the district — Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), municipal councils and Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) — to hand over government land to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) for building affordable houses. Henceforth, only Mhada will build affordable houses. The local bodies were told to hand over to Mhada only those lands that do not have any reservation and whose title is clear. The affordable housing target for the district this year is 50,000 tenements. The minister had convened a meeting of chief executive officers (CEOs) of district’s municipal councils for this purpose on Wednesday. He took a review of the progress of affordable housing schemes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Top housing officials and CEO of Mhada were present in the meeting. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was asked to set up a cell for affordable housing. Some 72,000 applications have been received by NMC for affordable housing so far. The corporation officials were asked to certify these applications.
