The civic body has filed only 60 criminal cases against illegal constructions in a year. Though the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had served notices to over 7,500 constructions, action was taken only against 3,500. Officials cited staff shortage and court cases as the main reasons for taking fewer action against illegal constructions in the city. A civic official said criminal cases were only filed against property owners repeatedly found guilty of illegal constructions. Generally, the PMC’s action involves sending notices to owners of illegal constructions, directing them to show cause for not taking proper permission before construction. The notices offer owners the option of demolishing the illegal constructions themselves. If the property owners do not demolish them, the civic administration razes them.
