Just four days ahead of the deadline for registrations under the Tenancy Act, Chennai has recorded just 200 registrations. Considering the dismal figure and some operational difficulties on the official portal, the housing and urban development department has decided to extend the deadline by three months. The Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants (Amendment) Act 2018, which came into force on February 22, mandates registration of all rental and lease agreements. The registrations were to be made by May 22. Failure to register with the rent authorities will put the landlord and tenant in a fix as the rent authority will not take up their cases for hearing without registration.
