Notice issued to 150 property buyers for evading stamp duty
Taking cognizance of malpractices taking place at the stamp and registration department, district administration has served notice on 150 property buyers for evading stamp duty. These people allegedly evaded paying stampduty to the tune of Rs 5.45 lakh. Besides, a probe has been initiated into involvement of staffers of the stamp and registration department, causing revenue loss to the government. On an average around 10 complaints of stamp duty evasion are received every day at the office of the district magistrate and the sub-divisional magistrates. Officers order probe on basis of these complaints. According to sources, the maximum number of complaints pertain to cases related to sub-registrar’s offices under Sadar sub-division. Of the number of notices issued for tax evasion, 40% are property buyers in newly developed areas on outskirts of the city. In these cases, stamp duty is not as per the revised circle rates. Employees and officials of the stamp and registration department can face action against them for the same.
