The Tamil Nadu state government has decided to set up another committee under the land revenue department to take forward the land acquisition process for expansion of the city airport. This would be the second committee formed to take care of the process in the last two-and-a-half years. The committee will negotiate with the land owners to come to a settlement. The AAI chairman was in the city to nudge the State government to speed up the land acquisition. Sources said he decided to fly down and meet senior bureaucrats in person, because the civil aviation ministry was not getting a positive response from the Tamil Nadu government. The meeting was attended by Velumani, chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, transport secretary PWC Davidar, commissioner for land administration Mohan Pyare and airport director N Mahalingam. AAI has decided to study two options—take up expansion of other parts of the airport, excluding the runway, using the available land or to wait and see how much land the State government gives them and then decide ways to go about the expansion.
