Marathon discussions with Cidco MD Bhushan Gagrani, the local MP and legislators of Panvel and Uran taluka with Navi Mumbai airport project-affected persons (PAP) helped break a fortnight-long deadlock over the development work. Upset with the rehabilitation package for about 3,500 families from 10 villages in the core airport area, which has already been tweaked twice, villagers and local leaders had stalled the work. Cidco is the nodal authority for the Navi Mumbai international airport. A “middle-of-the road” solution was worked out under which Ulwe hill operations will start with police protection and Cidco will not force, but convince villagers to shift out from the 10 hamlets in the core airport area where pre-development works stopped on October12 due to protests. The meeting was attended by Cidco joint MD Prajakta Lavangare Varma, other officials. Around 500 people attended the session amid heavy police presence. “Work will start from Saturday. I have got four platoons of state reserve police. We will not force the villagers to shift, but convince them to avail of the developed plots where they have to build new houses. Out of the 2,771 developed plots, 1977 are ready. The remaining ones will get ready soon,’’ Gagrani said.
