Murky real estate deals behind murders

At least seven elected representatives, of which a majority are village panchayat presidents, were hacked to death since 2009, the latest being the murder of an AIADMK councillor in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu. The alleged involvement of most of these people in shady real estate deals, rivalry over quarrying and their rapid political growth are cited as the key motives for the killings. Many of the people who come into politics at the panchayat level are not well educated and have taken up real estate dealings and small trade as their profession. A boom in the real estate sector in the suburbs combined with clash in 'business' interests are leading to crime and murder.
