The Centre has continued the lockdown measures up to May 31 varying in degrees, durations and districts identified by the states. Inter-state movement of traffic based on consent of respective states, have been allowed. Air travel and metro services remain prohibited as most states opposed their resumption. Educational institutions, religious places, hotels, restaurants, cinema halls and shopping malls will remain closed. Local authorities to ensure that shops and markets open with staggered timings, so as to ensure social distancing. However, in containment zones, only essential activities shall be allowed, as mentioned earlier. Night Curfew shall continue to remain in force on the movement of individuals, for all non-essential activities, between 7 pm and 7 am. Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani is President, (Nation) NAREDCO commented, “We look forward to ‘relaxations and openings’ which will help sustain livelihood too. The ‘zoning’ will be decided by the State Governments/ Union Territories, and I see this shifting of decision-making as empowering the states, which is a good step. The economic reforms which have been announced along with the stimulus package point to a calibrated reopening of economic activity, and in Lockdown 4.0, the ‘ease of opening up’, with due precautions, comes as a ray of hope – we should see it enabling India to move into the ‘new normal’, of life along with buffer and containment zones.” Sushil Mohta, Chairman- Merlin Group and President CREDAI West Bengal sharing his views stated, “The lockdown period has been extended till the end of this month, although some relaxation has been given but it is useless. Industries and business entities cannot function in isolation and in absence of a proper eco system for business. It is really important to start local trains, buses and other modes of public transport of course, with limited passengers, and all precautions then only workers can reach the factories, construction sites, offices etc. It is really unfortunate that Shopping Mall, Restaurants are closed, whereas it is very easy to follow the norms of social distancing, public hygiene in a Mall, which is managed by a professional team for facility management. Same goes for the hotels and resorts that are professionally managed. Hotels, malls, restaurants in the last 50 days have developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for operating post COVID lockdown, where proper care has been taken for health and hygiene and various other factors related to public health safety. It was expected that the Central Government will announce some relaxation for these sectors, where poor workers are employed. To combat the situation arising out of COVID, the Government needs to create a proper health care system, awareness for the public about various Do’s and Don’ts and focus on the economy to start, otherwise more people will die out of hunger than Coronavirus.”
