The system for land acquisition for highways will go online from November. The road transport ministry expects the measure to reduce by 3-4 months the time taken for land acquisition process. The entire process will go digital and eliminate chances of mistakes, and will drastically cut the time taken for verification of land titles. Since the land records will be available digitally, there will be no need for verification by legal officials. Moreover, there will be fewer chances for mistakes during different stages of notification. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the ministry is the biggest land procuring agency. On an average, it acquires 7,500-9,000 hectares of land disbursing Rs 8,000 crore to Rs 9,000 crore compensation annually to the land owners. At present, the completion of land acquisition takes at least one-and-half years.Delay in land acquisition is the one of the key reasons for stuck and delayed highway projects across the country. `Bhoomiraashi', the website designed by the National Informatics Centre for this purpose, will host digital details of land of more than 6.45 lakh revenue villages across 668 districts. This will be the one-point platform for online processing of land acquisition and notifications as well.
