Coaching centres and hostels here are under the scanner of Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC), following the Surat coaching centre fire mishap that claimed lives of at least 23 people on Friday. The KMC has carried out intensive checking and appraisal of fire safety measures and equipment in over a dozen buildings, that include coaching institutes, hostels, hospitals, malls and marriage gardens on Saturday and Sunday. KMC authorities issued notices to most of them for flouting National Building Code (NBC) norms and asked their owners to immediately abide by the norms. Alarm bells for the safety of students, fire safety measures and equipment in almost 90 per cent buildings of the city, were found to be inadequate, in the fire safety audit conducted in 605 buildings in March this year. KMC, served notices to 505 building owners but none of the building owners responded to KMC, following which they have been served notices under the provisions of Rajasthan Municipality Act.
