Kolkata civic body to go on property tax drive
KMC will conduct a massive drive to convert the city’s unassessed properties before trying to take in the existing property tax payers under the fold of Unit Area Assessment. Assessing the city’s unassessed properties now poses a serious challenge to KMC’s revenue department officials, said sources. On one hand, the civic body’s assessment department employees can only watch helplessly the very slow response among the city’s property owners to convert to the UAA; on the other hand, lack of initiative to assess a large number of unassessed properties, especially lined up housing complexes along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, has resulted in a sharp decline in revenue for the civic body. “In such a situation, we did not have any option but to search for unassessed properties,” said a KMC revenue department official. KMC’s assessment department inspectors will conduct a special survey on unassessed properties along the Bypass areas.
