KMC to demolish illegal buildings in Kolkata
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided that the civic authorities will demolish buildings that will be illegally constructed. KMC mayor Firhad Hakim on Thursday said that a strict decision has been taken that illegal buildings will be demolished. “The building department is working on this matter,” he said. The KMC’s building department recently served a notice to one such building in ward number 67 that is allegedly being constructed in an illegal manner. The building department that has recently set up a monitoring cell to look into this issue, has received a list of about 700 such illegally constructed buildings across the city. “Often it is seen that small portions of a building is being set up not properly following the building rule. In these cases, it is seen as to whether these small portions could be legalised under the existing rules. This is a separate issue. But in many cases it is being seen that entire floors are being built illegally. These will need to be demolished for the future safety of the building,” said a KMC building department official.
