Kerala government sanctions for housing project for fishermen
The state government has issued revised administrative sanction for the completion of basic infrastructure works at Muttathara fishermen residential colony, the first large-scale housing scheme implemented for fishermen families vulnerable to sea erosion in the district, taking the total amount invested for basic infrastructure alone at Rs 2.6 crore. Although the housing project was almost completed by the middle of 2018, infrastructure works related to internal roads, sewage, drainage, water connection, electricity connection and compound wall remained incomplete. Harbour engineering department had initially given technical sanction of Rs 2.25 crore to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) to set up basic infrastructure for housing colony. However, during the course of work, additional 27 items had to be included, escalating the project estimate by Rs 35.73 lakh. The government has now given additional administrative sanction for Rs 35 lakh. At Muttathara, 24 blocks with each containing eight flats were completed to accommodate 192 families. Each flat measuring 540sqft has got two bedrooms, dining area, kitchen and bathrooms complete with sanitary fittings. The project was executed on land measuring 5.5 acres. The housing project at Muttathara primarily aimed at choosing beneficiaries from four coastal villages which include Valiyathura, Cheriyathura, Valiyathoppu and Cheriyathoppu. The total estimate of the project is Rs 20 crore.
