The state government’s urban development ministry has allowed Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to be the planning authority in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ)area in their premises. As per a proposal by JNPT (via a notification dated August 11, 2014), the Union ministry of commerce and industry has declared an area measuring approximately 277.387 hectares in villages Sawarkhar, Karal, Sonari and Jaskhar in the Uran Taluka as an SEZ. The notification issued by the state government on December 20, during the Winter Session in Nagpur, said the chairman of JNPT had requested the government on March 1, 2017, to appoint JNPT as the Special Planning Authority as per the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 (MRTP). JNPT Deputy Chairperson Neeraj Bansal said, “We have received the notification. It will help us setting up a single-window clearance system for projects that come in the SEZ.” The urban development ministry has also declared that any other planning authority or special planning authority functioning in that particular notified area prior to this MRTP notification shall cease to function from the date of publication of the notification in the official gazette.
