The 13 companies at the IT Park served notice to pay property tax are not exempted from the levy, the municipal corporation (MC) has claimed. “They do not fall under the SEZ (Special Economic Zone), which is out of the tax ambit. So, they are liable to pay the amount,” said MC officials. One of the companies has already paid the tax to the civic body. The tax branch of the municipal corporation has procured the record of the companies from the estate office of the UT administration to reinforce its case. “The record clearly implies that the companies fall under the tax ambit since they started work in Chandigarh. They are not exempted by the UT administration. We even asked the companies to show us their allotment letter, where any exemption is mentioned, but they failed to produce any such proof,” said Anil Kumar Garg, additional municipal commissioner, who heads the tax branch of the MC. The tax amount is crucial for the MC to generate its income. The civic body has speeded up the process to recover the dues, sending attachment notices to the defaulters. One out of the 13 companies asked to pay property tax has paid Rs 11 lakh to the municipal corporation. “We are hopeful that other companies will follow the same path. Otherwise, action will be taken as per the norms,” said an official.
