On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2021, Prakash Javadekar. Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Government of India in his message to the country said, “Ecology is part of our culture. We believe that animals, birds, fruits, flowers, vegetation as well as humans all coexist and grow together. India has 25% of world’s land mass, receives only 4% of world’s rainfall and has 18% of world’s population. For land conservation, our target is to restore 26 million hectares of land in next 10 years. This year India holds presidency of two global conferences of UNCCD, one on restoration of degraded lands and second on conservation of migratory birds.” United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2021 said that the pandemic has reminded us how much we depend on each other. How much we depend on nature. In his message he stated, “Today is International Day for Biological Diversity, with its theme of “We’re part of the solution”. On behalf of the UNCCD, I want to remind you: sustainable land management is a huge part of the solution. The greatest problems facing humanity – including land degradation, biodiversity loss, and global warming – are closely linked. In studies across the world, land restoration programmes have repeatedly been shown to increase biodiversity by up to half. It’s not just biodiversity that benefits. Better food and water security, reduced carbon emissions, and healthy air quality can all be delivered by land restoration. This is how we build a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future. We already have the tools – like responsible land governance, and investments that protect and restore nature. Let’s use them.”
