India’s first Green Building Rating System for Hill Habitats

The 16th Green Building Congress 2018, India’s premier green buildings event organised by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), opened with a Curtain Raiser session and the launch of India’s first ‘Green Building Rating System for Hills’ by Mr Ajay Mishra, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Energy, Environment, Forest, Science & Tech Dept, Government of Telangana. The new IGBC rating is intended for hill cities, differentiating the sustainability needs of urban development in hills as compared to cities in the plains. Other rating systems that would be launched during the Green Building Congress 2018 include the IGBC Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and IGBC Green Resorts rating system. This would take the total number of rating systems launched by IGBC to 25. The curtain-raiser was conducted in the august presence of Mr Ajay Mishra, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Energy, Environment, Forest, Science & Tech Dept, Government of Telangana; Mr V Suresh, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), Mr Anil Kumar Epur, former Chairman, CII-Southern Region and Mr. C Shekhar Reddy, Chairman, IGBC Hyderabad Chapter The curtain raiser also featured an awards ceremony where Hyderabad’s famous Botanical Gardens was recognised with an IGBC Gold rating(Green Landscape rating). Some of the green features incorporated in the garden include 80 percent green cover, on-site solar panels catering to 50 percent of annual energy consumption, and a centre for biodiversity awareness. The event will continue on November 1 with the Green Building Congress Inaugural, which will be addressed by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Key speakers at the Congress will include Ms Lisa Bate, Chair of the Board, World Green Building Council; Mr Tai Lee Siang, Immediate Past Chair, World Green Building Council; Mr Raymond Rufino, Chairman, Philippine Green Building Council; Shri Gaur Gopal Das Prabhu, renowned motivational speaker and life coach, ISKCON; and MrJaxay Shah, National President, Confederation of Real Estate Developers of India. The Green Building Congress 2018 is a vital forum to propel India to achieve a 10 billion sq. ft green building target by 2022 and showcase innovative building products, materials and technologies. The event returns to Hyderabad after four years, and will focus on green homes, green affordable housing, healthcare, green and smart cities. Over 100 innovative and futuristic green building products and technologies would be on display. some of the products displayed include plant air purifiers, plumbing fixtures, low VoC paints, lighting systems, pollution control devices, rainwater harvesting, bio-cleaners, architectural boards and panels, construction blocks and material, and green cement. Over 3,000 national and international delegates will attend the 3-day event and over 10,000 visitors are expected to visit the international exhibition.
