India among Top 5 Globally in Green Buildings
The IGBC, with the support of the government, developers, corporate sector, institutes and other stakeholders has enabled India to become one of the top 5 Countries in the world in terms of green buildings. The country has achieved a 7.50 billion square feet of green building footprint so far. As on date, there are 5,975 projects, equivalent to 7.55 billion square feet from green buildings and green built-environment in the country. “We have now achieved 75 per cent of our dream to facilitate 10 billion sq ft of green building footprint by 2022” said IGBC. India's dominant position in the green building movement is significant due to the country's ggressive plans to expand access to electricity, its explosive economic growth projections and unprecedented and rapid urbanisation. USGBC's announcement also comes at a time of increased environmental awareness in India with conversations across the subcontinent focusing on alleviating the highly toxic levels of air and water pollution.
