Growing construction debris used perfectly
Managing the city’s ever-growing construction waste has proved to be an uphill task for the government, but Kolkata government has got a perfect idea! The idea rose when the volume of debris was doubling in three years since 2015 and the state environment department has sounded alarm bells and turned to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for a solution. In response, the civic solid waste management department has decided to install two stone-crushers at Dhapa dumping ground for now and aims to set up an entire crushing unit at the dump yard. The plan is to break the discarded construction materials at the crushing unit into smaller pieces and recycle them for road repairs and maintenance work. The civic body is in talks with both Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) and Indian Road Congress for utilizing the waste as a base layer when it came to building roads and repairing them. According to the KMC solid waste management department, not only has the quantum of waste being dumped at Dhapa increased by 50% since 2015, from 4,000 tonnes a day to 6,000 tonnes, the composition of waste has altered dramatically, with construction debris pie increasing by 200% from 800 tonnes a day to 2,400 tonnes.
