Next winter, use of diesel generator (DG) sets will not be allowed in Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad, Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana. This was decided in a meeting of the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) with the authorities of the NCR states. “We won’t allow anyone to use diesel generator sets in industrial as well as residential areas. We need to work with the authorities and industries department to decide the plan of action to ensure the ban is implemented,” EPCA chief Bhure Lal said, adding that he will meet Haryana and UP power agencies on January 30 to discuss the issue. During the recent EPCA meeting, it was also debated on whether solar energy or gas-based generators could be used instead of the polluting DG sets. “Why can’t these industries be asked to use solar? Come back with an action plan,” panel member Sunita Narain told the authorities of UP and Haryana. Officials said that solar battery backup for this magnitude of power requirement was not available for want of enough storage capacity. Some Haryana societies were using gas-based generators but supply across the whole of NCR still remained an issue.
