Amphan, the most severe storm in the Bay of Bengal since the Odisha super cyclone of 1999, flattened houses, uprooting trees and electric pylons, causing rivers to swell. The losses will be at three levels — loss to life and property because the storm was tremendous; loss to basic infrastructure, which will take months to leap back to normalcy, and thirdly, loss to livelihoods due to saline water intrusion and large-scale inundation. Experts said residents of the deltaic areas of the Sunderbans could face an impact on their livelihoods for years to come because of large-scale inundation and saline water intrusion onto their lands. West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has announced Rs 1,000 cr fund for restoration work. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to West Bengal and Odisha today to take stock of the situation in the wake of cyclone Amphan and conduct aerial surveys. He will also take part in review meetings in which relief and rehabilitation will be discussed.
