The Coimbatore Corporation on Saturday demolished 126 houses and two temples that were constructed illegally on water bodies and along the margins of the highway at Ganapathy. While 107 houses and two temples were demolished along the Rabindranath Tagore Road, 19 houses were demolished at Maniyakarampalayam. “Eviction notices were issued to the occupants of the encroachments three months ago and alternative accommodations were provided,” a corporation official said. “Most the residents had shifted to the housing unit of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) at Keeranatham. The corporation had paid for the apartments,” he told media. The corporation has been expediting the eviction drive to implement the lake restoration and rejuvenation projects under its smart city mission. It had identified 4,263 encroachments in the city limit. Over 1,000 such encroachments have already been cleared.“We plan to complete the eviction drive this month,” the official added.
