Tightening its noose around property tax defaulters, the Chandigarh municipal corporation on Monday sent attachment notices to 29 more commercial units for pending property tax arrears. The MC commissioner, KK Yadav, had recently ordered the MC tax branch to send notices to defaulters. The civic body had started taking action against defaulters in the wake of its huge financial crisis, which even led to certain works getting halted, owing to lack of funds. An increase in property tax compliance is among the initiatives mooted by the MC commissioner to increase the civic body's internal resources. The corporation is targeting to achieve tax collection of Rs 50 crore this year. So far, the collection has touched nearly Rs 40 crore. Last year, property tax had fetched the municipal corporation Rs 43 crore. Among the latest notices, one has been sent to plot number 167 in the Industrial Area here, which owes Rs 4.50 lakh to the MC. A Sector 32 SCO having plot number 74 has been sent a notice for recovery of dues to the tune of Rs 2.07 lakh while plot number 440-A in Industrial Area, Phase II, has been sent the notice for collection of dues totalling Rs 1.36 lakh. Manimajra's SCF number 214 has been asked to pay Rs 1.65 lakh on account of tax arrears. Then SCF no. 66 in Sector 20 has been put on recovery notice worth 2.59 lakh. All these units have been given 15 days to clear their tax arrears. If they fail to oblige, then the municipal corporation will seal these in accordance with the provisions of law to recover the dues.
