The general house of the municipal corporation (MC) in its meeting on Wednesday rejected the agenda to increase house tax by 10% annually and impose property tax in the 13 newly-included villages. The UT administration can now revise and impose the tax on its own in both the areas by using its special powers, as it did last year in October by issuing a notification. Since the MC had received audit objection of Rs 1 crore for not imposing the tax timely in the earlier included villages in 2006, the house tax committee of the MC discussed both tax-related matters and recommended to bring them in the house meeting. “When house tax was first imposed during the financial year of 2013-2014, it was categorically mentioned that the same will be revised after every year, but it never was. Some of the officers are liable as to why they remained lenient on the issue. Moreover, imposition of tax on the 13 villages is a basic requirement, as they are now under municipal area and their development will be done by the MC,” said an MC official.
