The BMC has issued demolition notices to residents of around 900 “illegal” slum unitsinBehrampada at Bandra (East) so that it can go ahead with the work of widening a drain. There are 330 housing structures in the area, each having at least a storey or two above. The slums cause traffic jams. The government wants to rehabilitate these slum-dwellers. While those living on the ground floor will be shifted to Malad, those on the upper floors will be moved to Mahul. The BMC wanted to start a demolition drive of these structures on Thursday. However, the residents protested, saying they were being dumped in Malad and Mahul where basic civic amenities are lacking. The demolition plan had to be shelved due to the protests.
