The BMC is likely to demolish houses of at least 30 residents of Nehru Nagar slum in Vile Parle West on Monday, as a part of desilting of the storm water drain system. The civic body has served the slum dwellers 48 hours notice to vacate the houses without giving any alternative accommodation. The BMC notice read,"It has been informed by deputy chief engineer (SWD) of MCGM that because of cropping up of such unauthorised obstructions/encroachments/constructions along and over the nalla, the desilting/cleaning of the nalla cannot be done properly, which results in flooding of Nehru Nagar slum and the road surface at SV Road and VM Road during the monsoon every year. In order to avoid the problems of flooding and the possibility of any disaster during monsoon, it is necessary to remove all unauthorised obstructions/encroachments/ constructions immediately. You are hereby called upon to remove the unauthorised obstruction//encroachments/ constructions which has been made by you at your residence/premise mentioned within 48 hours from receipt of this notice, failing which the same will be removed by the office at your entire risk and cost and without giving any further reference/intimation to you which may please be noted."
