With the local construction industry suffering from non-availability of river sand, quarry operators in Coimbatore have started making manufactured sand (M-sand). In the last six months, the number of M-sand manufacturers has increased significantly, real estate developers in the city said. President of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (Credai), Coimbatore, Rajesh B Lund, said, “The non-availability of river sand has become a problem for builders in the city. So, many quarry operators have started manufacturing M-sand.” While builders in the city require about 5,000 units of sand per day, the present manufacturing capacity is only about 2,000 units. “It is easy for quarry operators as they already have environmental clearances and space. All they need to do is install the machinery for M-sand manufacturing,” said Rajesh Lund. The current price of M-sand is Rs 5,000 per unit. “It is high time we moved to M-sand. While we are keen about using it, we are also particular about its quality. We follow the national building code,” said Rajesh Lund. Credai on Tuesday announced its 9th edition of Fairpro, the annual property show, from November 24 to 26 at Codissia Trade Fair Complex. The fair will have 35 property dealers displaying ready-to-occupy properties in the city and also upcoming projects. Besides, seven banks and financial companies will also take part in the fair.
