If an earthquake hits Delhi-NCR any time soon, at least 60% of highrises might collapse or suffer severe damage. This was revealed by the head of disaster management at Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA), Abhay Kumar Shrivastava, on Thursday. Shrivastava said most of the buildings in the city are over 10 years old and not earthquake-resistant. Calling this a serious concern, he asked real estate developers must ensure that mandatory parameters are followed while constructing buildings in Gurugram and adjoining areas. On lack of technology being adopted by realtors, he said the main reason for not adopting time-tested technologies is lack of awareness. “Even in the face of imminent threat, the awareness levels among the people, at large, for earthquake safety is extremely low and therefore no one seeks answers on how safe a building is,” Shrivastava said. “There is no guidance or nudging from the agencies concerned for implementing higher safety norms even in critical buildings like hospitals, highrises and schools,” he added. Not a single building in Gurugram has been audited as far as architectural and structural designs are concerned thus the level of risk can be alarming, he said.
