Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has finally cracked the whip against erring contractors. Three contractors have been blacklisted for the first time by the civic body taking into account the terrible condition of the roads. After the mayor announced that action will be taken against those responsible for the bad roads, the commissioner on the basis of preliminary investigation blacklisted Aakash Infrastructure Project Private Ltd, J R Agrawal and GPC Infrastructure Private Ltd for three years.

Further action will be taken on the basis of vigilance report against other contractors and officials responsible for the damaged roads. Aakash Infrastructure had been granted 12 contracts costing Rs 86.34 crore to build roads in 2016 and five contracts costing Rs 52.10 crore of building roads in 2017. GPC Infrastructure had been granted six contracts costing Rs 37.35 crore of building roads in 2016 and three contracts costing Rs 33.87 crore in 2017. JR Agrawal had been granted three contracts costing Rs 29.70 crore of building roads in 2016. Mayor Gautam Shah said, “On the basis of preliminary investigation in the case of broken roads, the municipal commissioner had been officially requested to blacklist three contractors, which has been done. A vigilance report has been prepared, based on which action will be taken against other responsible contractors.”

Contracts of new roads with only layers of DBM (Dense Bituminous Macadam) and BC (Bituminous Concrete) will not be passed, only contracts with complete roads will be passed, Shah added. Standing Committee Chairman Pravin Patel said, “No contractors were blacklisted for damaged roads earlier, but now we have blacklisted three contractors as the extent of damage is very high.” Oppostion leader Dinesh Sharma said, “Blacklisting three contractors is good but probe should be carried out against other contractors too, besides officials who had a major hand in the corruption in roads that have been washed away.
