The Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) will soon be issuing recovery certificates to 70,000 house tax defaulters in the city who are yet to clear dues for the past 10 years. The civic body had issued notices to these property owners earlier but failed to receive any response. Municipal commissioner, Vijay Kumar, said, “Thousands of people owning residential and commercial properties in the city have not paid taxes for several years. We have identified these defaulters and ward-wise lists have also been prepared to keep a tab on evaders. If they fail to clear outstanding dues, legal action will be initiated against them.” In 2012, AMC had conducted a survey on house tax collection in city areas and owners of 1.80 lakh properties were found to be defaulting on tax payment. A large number of erring owners had started paying tax post demonetisation as the civic body, on orders of the state government, allowed payment via scrapped notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. In the financial year 2016-17, AMC had recovered Rs 25 crore as tax money. This year, the target is set at Rs 28 crore. But officials also said that if assessed and compounded properly, the per annum collection of house tax here can go up to Rs 75 crore.
