Agra civic body issues notices to 50,000 house tax defaulters
The Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration has served notices to around 50,000 defaulters, directing them to deposit their outstanding house tax within one month. If they fail to do so, action would be initiated against them, it has warned. Those who have a problem over computation of tax have told to approach the house tax department to resolve their problems within the next 15 days. According to civic body officials, some of property owners have not paid their tax for over the past five years. A list of all such cases is being prepared. Additional municipal commissioner Vijay Kumar said, “In first phase, major defaulters are being targeted. Notices have been issued to a large number of people to clear their dues. In case, they fail to do so, legal action will be initiated against them.” The AMC area comprise 100 municipal wards. The total number of registered properties in the city is 1.80 lakh. At present, only 80,000 property owners are paying their taxes on time. The sources said a majority of the defaulters have run up dues in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh and above. Around 45% of the defaulters fall in this category. Some 35% defaulters have to pay Rs 1.5 lakh as house tax dues. The remaining 20% have to pay over Rs1.5 lakh.
