To align architectural education with the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Council of Architecture (COA) has released the Minimum Standards of Architecture Education Regulations, 2020. The architecture courses are 5-year-degree programmes but often students realise mid-way that their aspirations do not align with the field or they get opportunities elsewhere. Such students will now be able to take an exit after completing 3 years of architecture course. As part of the regulations, the council has introduced the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system for architecture courses across the country. Earlier, universities and institutes followed either percentage or grade system. But the grades had to ultimately be converted in percentage format as the council only recognised percentage evaluation. “The CGPA system has been adopted by educational institutes across the globe and it will help streamline the evaluation process in architecture courses,” Habeeb Ahmed Khan, president of COA told. The council has also introduced a choice-based credit system for architecture courses. As the field is a simulation of other fields including engineering, arts, design and technology, the students must learn as per their interests independent of the semester courses. The 8th and 9th semester of the architecture courses will be dedicated to hands-on training where the students will get a chance to get on-site experience apart from the theoretical aspects of drafting, drawing and designing. The focus will be on practical training and the move could provide the necessary push for incorporating internships as an integral part.
