PARTNERING FOR DEVELOPMENT
Arvind Limbavali, Member Legislative Assembly, Mahadevapura, the richest constituency of Bengaluru briefs on the challenges of his area and vociferously advocates public and private partnership to improve the deepening environmental crisis of Bengaluru city. INTERVIEW BY: SAPNA SRIVASTAVA Arvind Limbavali, a civil engineer by education joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early in his life. Talking about the transition from engineering to politics, he reminisced, “For my engineering education, I moved to Bengaluru, finally settling here permanently. Being an active member for Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), I was advised to join the BJP And that’s how I forayed in Indian politics, later on becoming the state general secretary for BJP from Bangalore in the year 1994. I have served three consecutive terms as MLA from Mahadevapura, 2008, 2013 and once again in 2018. During my first tenure, I had the opportunity to serve as the Minister of higher education and health & family welfare.” CHALLENGES OF A GROWING FINANCIAL SUBURB Out of the 28 constituencies in Karnataka, Mahadevapura is one is the biggest with 5.0 lakh registered voters as per last elections which is double the average of other constituencies. The region has also become a major IT hub and houses several Indian and international IT companies. While, these factors come with advantages of being a prosperous constituency, the downside includes problems of urban planning, traffic congestion and specifically waste disposal. Due to the high population, garbage collection and disposal has become a major problem. In addition, the lakes in the area are gradually being encroached upon and are getting highly polluted. But, all these conservation and development plans need funds. This is a major problem. RESOLUTION TO THE CHALLENGES Apart from the large private companies, we are also encouraging participation of well-known planners and environmentalists to mobilize citizens and social organizations for better maintenance of the areay. We have created tasks forces for the same. Alternate roads are being developed and scientific processing of waste is being implemented. We are undertaking meticulous planning through various community programs for lakes rejuvenation and aim to get feedback from the citizens as well as experts and thus find solutions.
