FAITH IN YOURSELF IS IMPORTANT
“Where there’s self-belief, inhibitions must make way. Believe in yourself and your capabilities, create your own identity, put in a lot of honest hard work and no matter where you are or what you do, you will succeed.” Kanika Gupta Shori, Co-founder and COO, Square Yards How have you maintained synergies between professional and personal life? With a bit of careful planning and family support, ladies can have the best of both worlds. As the COO of India’s leading proptech startup, 24 hours seem too few on some days. We have operations in 10 countries now, so I must travel a lot as well. This means I am away from family for long periods of time. For a mother, staying away from her children is difficult to start with, but it would have become impossible for me to manage this without the unfailing support system that I get from my husband and our parents. What are some of the career achievements that are close to your heart? What has really left a mark as a serious achievement for me was the formation of Square Yards, in circumstances where few would have expected something this big to happen. That is truly the one achievement that sticks. I was just out of maternity, trying to manage two growing kids. The world wasn’t the best place for women entrepreneurs, more so, the real estate industry. Square Yards is the happiest thing that ever happened in my life and I am most proud of it. What are the general perceptions about women in your field of career and how have you handled them? Firstly, there is this constant need to prove yourself if you’re a woman. Then, there is the work life balance which saps time and energy at an incredible rate every day. We are expected to take leadership roles in our families and be a leader at work. It is like juggling two equally demanding full-time jobs. The key to smooth sailing through today’s corporate landscape is self-belief, confidence in your decisions and self-discipline. I strive for a greater goal in general and let other smaller things fall in line with that vision. What we create today is the only thing that will outlive us. Entrepreneurs must take responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we can only imagine.
